Acquired in a trade from the Edmonton Oilers on February 27, 2016 in exchange for Pittsburgh's 3rd round choice in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Justin Schultz helped add depth and solidified the Penguins' defense corps heading into the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Schultz scored one goal and added seven assists in 18 regular season games with the Penguins. After playing sparingly in the first two rounds, Schultz played in every game after Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals adding four assists in 15 games played during the Playoffs.
In Game 1 of the 2016 Stanley Cup Final, Schultz took a backhand pass trailing Bryan Rust into the San Jose zone at the top of the circles and fired a wrist shot on goal. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones blocked the shot, but the rebound came right to Rust who was following up the shot near the crease. Rust buried the rebound giving the Penguins a 1-0 lead with 7:14 left in the first period. Justin Schultz also assisted on Brian Dumoulin's goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup clinching game in San Jose.
