Sidney Crosby won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs. During the regular season he amassed 85 points in 80 games and finished seventh in the NHL in goals with 36 and third in the league in assists with 49 while playing in 80 games - just the fourth time he played in 80 or more games in a season in his career. After scoring just six goals and 13 assists (0.68 points-per-game) in the first 28 games of the season, Crosby caught fire under new coach Mike Sullivan who was hired on December 12, 2015, replacing Mike Johnston. Over Crosby's final 52 games of the season he scored 30 goals and 36 assists for 66 points (1.27 points-per-game).
Crosby concluded the 2015-16 with an 11-game road point scoring streak in which he recorded 15 points (5G, 10A) from March 1st to April 7th. The Penguins went 9-2-0 on the road over that span including winning the final eight games of the regular season away from CONSOL Energy Center. Crosby recorded six multiple point games on the road from January 12th to April 5th including a three-point effort on February 6, 2016 which marked his 900th point in the National Hockey League.

The jersey was acquired by PenguinsChronicles.com from a private collector on January 31, 2017 who purchased the jersey from J&J Distributing, who purchased the entire set of 2nd set jerseys directly from the Pittsburgh Penguins on May 19, 2016. The jersey features JerseyTRAK technology from Gleason Technology inside the base of the fight strap which allows the Penguins equipment staff to scan each jersey before and after the game in which it is used.
