The Penguins wore Reebok Edge (Air-Knit) jerseys - a style and cut that was introduced at the beginning of the 2007-08 NHL season - for the second consecutive season. The Penguins Alternate jerseys - the light blue style which was introduced at the 2008 Winter Classic - were worn for the second consecutive season.
The Reebok vector logo was featured on the back neckline with a white vector logo embroidered with black on the Home (black) jerseys, a black vector logo embroidered with white on the Road (white) jerseys, and a navy blue vector logo embroidered with white on the light blue Alternate jerseys. The inside neckline of each jersey features a size tag with a Canadian flag logo above the "Made in Canada" in three languages (English, French and Spanish) then the 7187 manufacturer's model number indicating the 2.0 Edge model with an "A" or "H" after the model number. Inside the left side seam is a manufacturer's washing instructions tag.
Jerseys were lettered and numbered by Cutting Edge Sports of Woburn, Massachusetts. Each jersey featured a set tag sewn inside the rear hem.
J&J Distributing of Ellwood City, PA purchased all sets of game worn regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs sets directly from the Pittsburgh Penguins and marketed the jerseys to the hobby.

The Penguins began wearing Set 1 jerseys with the start of the 2008-09 pre-season on September 20, 2008 vs. Tampa Bay. The set continued into the regular season and was worn until January 1, 2009 at Boston Bruins. The Home (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 15 games while the Road (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 21 games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn. Set 1 jerseys were sold by the Pittsburgh Penguins to J&J Distributing.

The Pittsburgh Penguins played three games in Europe as part of the National Hockey League's NHL Premiere to begin the 2008-09 season. On October 2, 2008, the Penguins played Jokerit (SM-liiga) in an exhibition game at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland. The Penguins defeated Jokerit 4-1. Two days later on October 4, 2008 the Penguins and Ottawa Senators opened the 2008-09 regular season at Stockholm, Sweden's Globe Arena. The next night the two teams met again at Globe Arena. The Penguins wore a special set of jerseys to commemorate the games including an NHL Premiere patch on the right chest of their Home (black) and Road (white) jerseys. The Home (black) jerseys were worn in two games - October 2nd vs. Jokerit and October 5th vs. Ottawa while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in the regular season opener on October 4th. Darryl Sydor, Janne Pesonen, and Jeff Taffe played on October 2nd vs. Jokerit, but did not dress on October 5th vs. Ottawa. Bill Thomas did not play on October 2nd vs. Jokerit, but did play on October 5th vs. Ottawa. Dany Sabourin played on October 2nd vs. Jokerit and dressed on October 5th vs. Ottawa, but did not play. A special set tag was also sewn inside the back hem of each jersey.

The set continued throughout the the regular season and was last worn on March 22, 2009 vs. Philadelphia. The Penguins began wearing Set 2 jerseys on January 5, 2016 vs. Chicago. The set continued throughout the remainder of the regular season and concluded on April 9, 2016 at Philadelphia. The Home (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 14 games while the Road (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 23 games. On April 9, 2009, the Penguins wore a special set of jerseys that were given to fans at the conclusion of the game vs. NY Islanders at Mellon Arena. The Penguins wore their Home (black) jerseys for this game and they were tagged with a special "Shirt Off Your Back" set tag inside the back hem. Hal Gill and Max Tablot were scratched for the game.

The Penguins began wearing their Stanley Cup Playoffs jerseys with the start of the 2009 Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 15, 2009 vs. Philadelphia. The set continued throughout the first three rounds of the Playoffs until the team advanced to the Stanley Cup Final on May 26, 2009 at Carolina. The Home (black) jerseys were worn in a total of eight games while the Road (white) jerseys were worn in a total of nine games. The Penguins advanced to the fourth Stanley Cup Final in franchise history by defeating the Carolina Hurricanes in four games. New jerseys were issued for the commencement of the Stanley Cup Final on May 30, 2009 as the Penguins faced the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The Home (black) jerseys were worn in three games while the and Road (white) jerseys were worn in four games. The Home (black) Stanley Cup Final jerseys were sold by the Pittsburgh Penguins to J&J Distributing. The players kept the Road (white) Stanley Cup Final jerseys that were worn when they won the Stanley Cup.
