The National Hockey League introduced the Reebok Edge (1.0 Knit & 2.0 Air-Knit) jerseys for the 2007-08 season. The style was worn during the 2007 NHL All-Star Game in Dallas. Shortly after their introduction, players complained about the size, cut, and ventilation of the new Edge (1.0) jerseys. The result was replacement of some of the knit sections with Air-Knit material, larger sleeves, and better sizing. The replacement version with Air-Knit panels was labeled as the 2.0 version of the Edge jersey style. The Penguins introduced Alternate jerseys at the 2008 Winter Classic in Buffalo - a light blue style which was patterned after the teams' jerseys from 1968 to 1972.
The city of Pittsburgh was founded on November 25, 1758 when British General John Forbes and his troops occupied Ford Duquesne. In honor of the city's birthday, the Penguins wore circular Pittsburgh 250 patches on the right shoulder of their Home (black) and Road (white) jerseys.
The Reebok vector logo was featured on the back neckline with a white vector logo embroidered with black on the Home (black) jerseys, a black vector logo embroidered with white on the Road (white) jerseys, and a navy blue vector logo embroidered with white on the light blue Alternate jerseys. The inside neckline of each jersey features a size tag with a Canadian flag logo above the "Made in Canada" in three languages (English, French and Spanish) then the 7187 manufacturer's model number indicating the 2.0 Edge model with an "A" or "H" after the model number. Inside the left side seam is a manufacturer's washing instructions tag.
Jerseys were lettered and numbered by Cutting Edge Sports of Woburn, Massachusetts. Each jersey featured a set tag sewn inside the rear hem.
J&J Distributing of Ellwood City, PA purchased all sets of game worn regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs sets directly from the Pittsburgh Penguins and marketed the jerseys to the hobby.
