For the first time since 1986-87, the Penguins wore jerseys by a different manufacturer than CCM during the 1996-97 NHL season when Starter became the official jersey manufacturer of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins Alternate jerseys - the gray mid-sectioned style which was introduced on January 27, 1996 - were worn for the second consecutive season.
The Starter logo (S with Star and STARTER underneath) was embroidered on the back right hemline with a black logo on the Home (white) and Road (black) jerseys, and a white logo on the Alternate jerseys. The Starter logo was sewn to the left of the the National Hockey League shield logo. The inside neckline of each jersey featured the Center Ice Authentic Collection / Mise Au Jeu Collection Authentique tag above the Starter manurfacturer's tag which were both sewn above the size tag. Inside the side seam was a manufacturer's washing instructions tag with the place of manufacture as Berlin, Wisconsin.
The Penguins' Set 1 jerseys were a heavy knit material while the Set 2 jerseys were made of a lighter mesh material. The Alternate jerseys were made of a tighter air-knit material.
PenguinsChronicles.com obtained and marketed the Set 1 Road (black) jerseys while J&J Distributing of Ellwood City, PA purchased and marketed the Set 1 Home (white) jerseys. Byron's Hockeyland purchased and marketed the Alternate jerseys and Set 2 Home and Road jerseys.

The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 30 games while the Road (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 32 games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn. The Penguins began wearing Set 2 jerseys on March 4, 1997 vs. New Jersey. The set continued throughout the remainder of the regular season 1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 11 games while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in a total of eight games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn. Set 2 jerseys were sold by the Pittsburgh Penguins to Bryon's Hockeyland.

The Penguins wore their Alternate jerseys a total of six times in 1996-97 beginning with the game on March 29, 1997 vs. Los Angeles. The set continued throughout the end of the regular season and 1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs including being worn in four road games - April 10 at Tampa Bay, April 11 at Florida, April 13 at Boston and April 26 at Philadelphia in what would be Mario Lemieux's final game before his first retirement. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn. The set of Alternate jerseys were sold by the Pittsburgh Penguins to Byron's Hockeyland.
