The Penguins wore CCM Ultrafil jerseys - a material that was introduced at the beginning of the 1988-89 NHL season - for the fourth consecutive season. In honor of the National Hockey League's 75th anniversary, all NHL teams wore the NHL 75th anniversary patch on the chest of their jerseys. Also, to pay homage to the league's original home and away color schemes, teams began wearing their dark color jerseys at home and their white color jerseys on the road after the NHL All-Star Game and continued through the end of the regular season before reverting back to customary white home jersey and dark road jersey color scheme for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Celebrating the team's 25th season in the National Hockey League, the Pittsburgh Penguins wore a 25th anniversary patch on the right shoulder of their jerseys patterned after the NHL's 75th anniversary logo, but with the three fading marks going in the opposite direction. The anniversary patch was not added to the Penguins' jerseys until October 17, 1991 vs. NY Islanders. Also, due to the passing of head coach "Badger" Bob Johnson on November 26, 1991, the Penguins began wearing a commemorative patch on the left shoulder of their jerseys in his honor. For the second consecutive season, the Penguins advance to the Stanley Cup Final and began wearing the 1992 Stanley Cup Final patch on their jerseys on May 26, 1992 vs. Chicago.
The CCM logo was embroidered on the back right hemline to the left of the the National Hockey League shield logo. The inside neckline of each jersey featured the Maska Ultrafil manufacturer's tag with a small size tag sewn next to it.
Byron's Hockeyland purchased and marketed at least one set of white and black jerseys in 1992 while the players retained both the Home (white) and Road (black) jerseys from the 1992 Stanley Cup Final.
