The Penguins wore CCM Ultrafil jerseys - a material that was introduced at the beginning of the 1988-89 NHL season - for the third consecutive season. Due to the Penguins missing the 1990 Stanley Cup Playoffs on the final day of the 1989-90 regular season, they had leftover home and road jerseys at the beginning of the 1990-91 season with the 1990 NHL All-Star Game patch on the left shoulder. The Penguins wore the first set of jerseys with the 1990 NHL All-Star Game patch until October, 1990 when the Chicago Blackhawks, host of the 1991 NHL All-Star Game, filed a complaint with the National Hockey League.
For the first time in franchise history, the Penguins advanced to the Stanley Cup Final and began wearing the 1991 Stanley Cup Final patch on their jerseys on May 15, 1991 vs. Minnesota.
The CCM logo was embroidered on the back right hemline to the left of the the National Hockey League shield logo. The inside neckline of each jersey featured the Maska Ultrafil manufacturer's tag with the size written onto it in blue ballpoint pen.
