After a two year hiatus, the Penguins returned to CCM as the official supplier of on-ice jerseys for the 1987-88 season. The Air-Knit jerseys featured the skating penguin logo screened on the front and the color scheme remained largely the same as previous years; however, the neckline on the Home (white) jerseys reverted back to the yellow that CCM used for the Penguins during the 1984-85 season. A "small block" CCM logo was embroidered onto the back right hem and CENTURY SPORTS no longer appeared on the back hem of the jerseys in 1987-88.
The Penguins also wore two distinct sets of jerseys during the 1987-88 season. While the CCM jerseys themselves were identical between both sets, the numbers on the shoulders and back were slightly different fonts with the first set being a thinner font on the back numbers and a thicker, more "full" outline of the numbers on the shoulders. After the 1988 NHL All-Star break, the Penguins introduced Set 2 which featured thicker back numbers and thinner borders on the shoulder numbers.
The inside neckline of each jersey featured a Maska Air-Knit tag that included text in English and French indicating the 100% polyester construction, washing instructions, trademarks and model "AG57" designations.

The Penguins wore CCM branded jerseys for the second consecutive season, but the material was changed to Ultrafil rather than the previous seasons' Air-Knit material. Set 1 jerseys featured all screened-on names, numbers and the skating penguin logo on the front. The collar of the Home (white) jersey changed to black and the numbers moved from the shoulders to the sleeves for both the Home (white) and Road (black) jerseys for the 1988-89 season. The back featured the small block CCM sewn on the back right hem with the CENTURY SPORTS customizer logo sewn on the back left hem.
Beginning with the second set of Home (white) jerseys on January 7, 1989 vs. Vancouver and Road (black) jerseys on January 15, 1989 at NY Rangers, the Penguins began wearing all sewn-on names, numbers and a gold-toe skating penguin crest. The names on the back were sewn onto a shoulder-length nameplate which straddled the horizontal shoulder seam for Set 2 of the 1988-89 season. The font of the sleeve numbers (wider) and back numbers (taller) also changed with the transition between Set 1 to Set 2. The font introduced in Set 2 would remain the font style to present day Penguins jerseys.
The inside neckline of each jersey featured the Maska Ultrafil manufacturer's tag with the size written onto it in blue ballpoint pen.

The Penguins began wearing Set 1 jerseys with the start of the 1988-89 regular season on October 7, 1988 at Washington. The set continued throughout the regular season and was worn until January 4, 1989 vs. CSKA (Home (white)) and January 12, 1989 at NY Rangers. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 21 games while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 20 games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn.
