After a two year hiatus, CCM returned as the Penguins' official supplier of on-ice jerseys for the 1987-88 season. The Air-Knit jerseys featured the skating penguin logo screened on the front and the color scheme remained largely the same as previous years; however, the neckline on the Home (white) jerseys reverted back to the gold that CCM used for the Penguins during the 1984-85 season. A "small block" CCM logo was embroidered onto the back right hem and CENTURY SPORTS no longer appeared on the back hem of the jerseys in 1987-88.
During the 1987-88 pre-season, the Penguins recylced their 1986-87 Cooper jerseys. The 1986-87 Home (white) Cooper jerseys were worn in three confirmed pre-season games (9/22 vs. Hartford, 9/27 at New Jersey and 10/2 vs. Montreal) while the Road (black) Cooper jerseys were worn in two confirmed pre-season games (9/26 at Montreal and 10/1 at Hartford).
The Penguins also wore two distinct sets of jerseys during the 1987-88 season. While the CCM jerseys themselves were identical between both sets, the numbers on the shoulders and back were slightly different fonts with the first set being a thinner font on the back numbers and a thicker, more "full" outline of the numbers on the shoulders. After the 1988 NHL All-Star break, the Penguins introduced Set 2 which featured thicker back numbers and thinner borders on the shoulder numbers.
The inside neckline of each jersey featured a Maska Air-Knit tag that included text in English and French indicating the 100% polyester construction, washing instructions, trademarks and model "AG57" designations.

The Penguins began wearing Set 1 jerseys with the start of the 1987-88 regular season on October 8, 1987 at NY Rangers. The set continued throughout the regular season and was worn for the final time on February 7, 1988 at NY Rangers. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 30 games while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 27 games during the 1987-88 regular season. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn.
