It's very likely that the Set 2 Home (white) and Road (black) and Alternate (gold) Sandow Sporting Knit Inc. jerseys from the 1980-81 season were recycled to the 1981-82 pre-season; however, it is unknown which color jersey was worn in each game. The Road (black) Set 2 jerseys from 1980-81 were recycled into the 1981-82 regular season as they were worn for the first three road games of the season with two-color sewn on names on back. The Home (white) Set 1 jerseys and Alternate (gold) Set jerseys were brand new jerseys with a single-color name screened on the back nameplate. On October 18, 1981, Pittsburgh switched to a second set of Road (black) jerseys that also featured a single-color name on back to match the Home (white) and Alternate (gold) jerseys.
All sets during the 1981-82 season featured a tri-color v-neck with gold/white/black striping on the Home (white) and Road (black) jerseys and white/gold/black neck striping on the Alternate jerseys. Home (white) and Road (black) sets of jerseys also featured gold sleeves with black/white/gold striping and black cuffs. The Alternate (gold) jerseys featured black sleeves with gold/white/black striping and yellow cuffs. A gold/black/white/gold striping design starting from the bottom of the hem was present on the Home (white) jerseys. A gold/black/white striping design starting from the bottom of the hem was present on the Road (black) jerseys. A black/white/gold/black striping design starting from the bottom of the hem was incorporated on the Alternate (gold) jerseys. The large skating penguin crest was screened onto the front of the jerseys. The shoulder and back numbers were also screened on.
