The set of Home (white) and Road (black) Stall & Dean jerseys introduced the previous season on January 30, 1980 vs. St. Louis were recycled to the 1980-81 season and used as Set 1. In late December, a new set of jerseys manufactured by Sandow were introduced. Both sets featured a tri-color v-neck with gold/white/black striping. Both sets of jerseys also featured gold sleeves with black/white/gold striping and black cuffs. A gold/black/white/gold striping design starting from the bottom of the hem was present on the Home (white) jerseys. A gold/black/white striping design starting from the bottom of the hem was present on the Road (black) jerseys. The large skating penguin crest was screened onto the front of the jerseys. The sleeve and back numbers were also screened on.
On January 7, 1981 vs. NY Islanders, the Penguins introduced Alternate (gold) jerseys. The Alternate (gold) jerseys featured a tri-color v-neck with white/gold/black striping. The sleeves were black with gold/white/black striping and gold cuffs. The jerseys also featured a black/white/gold/black striping design starting from the bottom of the hem. Screened onto the front of the Alternate (gold) jerseys was a large skating penguins crest.
Inside the neckline of the Set 1 jerseys is the Stall & Dean manufacturer's tag along with separate washing instruction, size, and year manufactured tags. The neck tagging is vertically aligned on both sets of jerseys. The small numerical size fly tag is sewn over the year "0" (1980) tag on the Set 1 jerseys.
Inside the neckline of the Set 2 jerseys and Alternate (gold) jerseys is the Sandow manufacturer's tag with the jersey's size sewn in front of a separate washing instruction tag.

The set was worn throughout the regular season until December 26, 1980 at Hartford. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 16 games while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 19 games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn.

The set was worn throughout the remainder of the regular season and 1981 Stanley Cup Playoffs until April 14, 1981 at St. Louis. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 10 games while the Road (black) jerseys were worn in a total of 24 games. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn.
