For the second consecutive season, the Penguins wore jerseys manufactured by Wilson. The new set of Wilson jerseys for 1971-72 featured a slightly different circular crest on the front. The letters of "PITTSBURGH" and "PENGUINS" dominated more of the navy blue outline and the dots on each side of the circle became more prominent. The circular-crested jerseys still featured contrasting shoulder yokes and simple stripes on the sleeves and waistline. The lace-up collars were still present with laces threaded through the eyelets and solid navy blue necklines.
The inside neckline of each jersey featured the Wilson manufacturer's tag with the numerical size of the jersey embroidered into the tag or handwritten in the lower right corner of the tag.
Midway through the season, the Penguins stripped the Set 1 jerseys of the circular crests and replaced them with a large skating penguin crest with the golden triangle background and continued to wear them throughout the remainder of the 1971-72 season and 1972 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Penguins began wearing Set 1 jerseys with the start of the 1971-72 regular season on October 9, 1971 vs. Philadelphia. The set continued throughout the regular season and 1972 Stanley Cup Playoffs and was worn until April 9, 1972 vs. Chicago. The Home (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 41 games while the Road (white) jerseys were worn in a total of 41 games. On New Year's Eve 1971, the Penguins debuted their Set 1 jerseys featuring only the skating penguin crest on the front. The circular outline around the smaller skating penguin was gone and a larger skating penguin crest was sewn on the Set 1 jerseys. Each individual jersey within the set was worn as allocated by the Pittsburgh Penguins and each jersey should be researched individually to determine exactly when each jersey was worn.
