Mario Lemieux won his third Art Ross Trophy as the National Hockey League's leading scorer registering 44 goals and 87 assists for 131 points during the 1991-92 season. He became just the eighth player in National Hockey League history to win the scoring title at least three times. Despite playing in only 64 games, Lemieux ranked second in the NHL in assists and tied for seventh in goals. Bernie Geoffrion in 1960-61 (64 games in 70 game season) was the last player to win the scoring title playing in 64 games or less. Mario Lemieux was named the Pro Set Player of the Year in 1991-92 and was named the National Hockey League Player of the Month in December 1991 and March 1992.
On March 24, 1992, Lemieux scored his 40th goal of the 1991-92 season and 404th regular season goal of his National Hockey League career in the second period at Detroit when his pass to Rick Tocchet deflected off the stick of Vladimir Konstantinov over Tim Cheveldae's shoulder at 4:50 of the second period. The goal gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Just 5:14 later, Lemieux set up Kevin Stevens off a faceoff for Stevens' 50th goal of the 1991-92 season and Lemieux's 596th regular season assist in the NHL giving Lemieux his 1,000th career regular season point. Lemieux achieved the milestone in his 513th career regular season game becoming the second fastest player to get to 1,000 points. Later in the 1991-92 season, Lemieux would lead the Penguins to its second consecutive Stanley Cup championship and he captured his second straight Conn Smythe Trophy of the Most Valuable Player of the 1992 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
