NHL AWARDS

 

STANLEY CUP

An annual award to the Nationial Hockey League playoffs champion.

Donated by Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada, in 1892 as an award for Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. In 1915, the two professional ice hockey organizations, the
National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), reached a gentlemen's agreement in which their respective champions would face each other for the Stanley Cup. After a series of league mergers and folds, it became the championship trophy of the NHL in 1926.

PRINCE OF WALES TROPHY


An annual award to the club which advances to the Stanley Cup Finals as the winner of the Wales / Eastern Conference Championship.

Donated to the National Hockey League in 1924 by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. From 1927-28 through 1937-38, the award was presented to the team finishing first in the American Division of the NHL. (The team finishing first in the Canadian Division received the O'Brien Trophy during these years.) From 1938-39, when the NHL reverted to one section, to 1966-67, it was presented to the team winning the NHL regular-season championship. With expansion in 1967-68, it again became a divisional trophy, awarded to the regular-season champions of the East Division through to the end of the 1973-74 season. Beginning in 1974-75, it was awarded to the regular-season winner of the conference bearing the name of the trophy. From 1981-82 to 1992-93 the trophy was presented to the playoff champion in the Wales Conference. Since 1993-94, the trophy has been presented to the playoff champion in the Eastern Conference.

PRESIDENTS' TROPHY

An annual award to the club finishing the regular season with the best overall record. The winner receives $350,000, to be split between the team and its players.
 

Presented to the National Hockey League in 1985-86 by the NHL Board of Governors to recognize te team compiling the top regular season record.

HART MEMORIAL TROPHY


An annual award given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association in all NHL cities at the end of the regular season.

Presented by the National Hockey League in 1960 after the original Hart Trophy was retired to the Hockey Hall of Fame. The original Hart Trophy was donated to the NHL in 1923 by Dr. David A. Hart, father of Cecil Hart, former manager-coach of the Montreal Canadiens.

CONN SMYTHE TROPHY

An annual award given to the most valuable player for his team in the playoffs. The winner is selected by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the conclusion of the final game in the Stanley Cup Finals.
 

Presented by Maple Leaf Gardens Limited in 1964 to honor Conn Smythe, the former coach, manager, president and owner-governor of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

ART ROSS TROPHY


An annual award given to the player who leads the League in scoring points at the end of the regular season.

 

Presented to the National Hockey League in 1947 by Arthur Howie Ross, former manager-coach of the Boston Bruins.

VEZINA TROPHY

An annual award given to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at this position as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs. Until the 1981-82 season, the goalkeeper(s) of the team allowing the fewest number of goals during the regular season were awarded the Vezina Trophy.


Presented to the National Hockey League in 1926-27 by Leo Dandurand, Louis Letourneau, and Joe Cattarinich, former owners of the Montreal Canadiens, in memory of Georges Vezina, outstanding goalkeeper of the Canadiens, who collapsed during an NHL game Nov. 28, 1925, and died of tuberculosis a few months later.

JAMES NORRIS MEMORIAL TROPHY

An annual award given to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

 

Presented in 1953 by the four children of the late James Norris in memory of the former owner-president of the Detroit Red Wings.

CALDER MEMORIAL TROPHY

An annual award given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

From 1936-37 until his death in 1943, Frank Calder, NHL President, bought a trophy each year to be given permanently to the outstanding rookie. After Calder's death, the NHL presented the Calder Memorial Trophy in his memory and the trophy is to be kept in perpetuity.

LADY BYNG MEMORIAL TROPHY


An annual award given to the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

 

Lady Byng, wife of Canada's Governor-General at the time, presented the Lady Byng trophy in 1925. After Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers won the award seven times in eight seasons, he was given the trophy to keep and Lady Byng donated another trophy in 1936. After Lady Byng's death in 1949, the National Hockey League presented a new trophy, changing the name to Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.

FRANK J. SELKE TROPHY

An annual award given to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game. The winner is selected in a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

 

Presented to the National Hockey League in 1977 by the Board of Governors of the NHL in honor of Frank J. Selke, one of the great architects of NHL championship teams.

MAURICE RICHARD TROPHY

An annual award given to the National Hockey League's top goal scorer by the NHL Board of Governors. Winners are selected based on regular season play.

Officially unveiled on January 24, 1999 as a gift to the National Hockey League from the Montreal Canadiens to honor the first played in League history to score 50 goals in 50 games, 50 goals in a season and 500 in a career.

JACK ADAMS AWARD

An annual award presented by the National Hockey League Broadcasters' Association to the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team's success. The winner is selected in a poll among members of the NHL Broadcasters' Association at the end of the regular season.

Presented by the NHL Broadcasters' Association in 1974 to commemorate the late Jack Adams, former coach and general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. His lifetime dedication to hockey has served as an inspiration to all who aspire to further the game.

LESTER B. PEARSON AWARD


An annual award to the "most outstanding player" in the NHL as voted by fellow members of the National Hockey League Players' Association.

The award was first presented in 1970-71 by the NHLPA in honor of the late Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada.

BILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY


An annual award under the trusteeship of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association and is given to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The winner is selected in a poll of all chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season.

Presented by the NHL Writers' Association in 1968 to commemorate the late William Masterton, a player for the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited, to a high degree, the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton died on Jan. 15, 1968, after an injury sustained during a hockey game.
